ISCAM - International Conferences for  Undergraduate and Graduate Students of Applied Mathematics

Zdenka  Riečanová - Michal Zajac

Department of Mathematics, FEI Slovak University of Technology, Bratislava

The Conferences are organized by Departments of Mathematics of two faculties of the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava. Professor Zdenka Riečanová from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology and professor Radko Mesiar from the Faculty of Civil Engineering are guaranties of these conferences. The original idea was to bring together graduate students in various areas of mathematics relevant for applications. For many of them this was the first opportunity to present their original results on an international conference.

The series of ISCAM-conferences started in April 1999 and continued every year in the middle of April. One hundred and ninety five participants attended the five conferences in 1999-2003. Students came from Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Ireland, Poland, Russia, Belarus, Spain, former Yugoslavia and Slovak Republic.

The editor of all five Proceedings of ISCAM-conferences is professor Michal Zajac from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Tomáš Bognár, a graduate student from the Faculty of Civil Engineering, edited books of abstracts.  The papers are refereed in the way usual for mathematical publications. Proceedings of ISCAMs are reviewed by the Zentralblatt für Mathematik. The Ministry of Education of the Slovak Republic granted the Conferences and publication of Proceedings. Deans of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, head of its Department of Mathematics and CEPUS, offered additional financial support.

Lectures are always held on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning in 3-4 sessions. Traditionally, Friday evening is time for non-formal discussions in the Club of the Faculty. The main local organizers are (former) graduate students Marta Šimovcová, Elena Pastuchová and Gejza Jenča.

Contributions presented by participants were from many areas of  mathematics, e.g., graph theory, coding theory, cryptography, quantum structures and quantum probability, fuzzy sets theory, T-norms, aggregation operators, many-valued logics, mathematical statistics and probability, financial mathematics, differential equations, theoretical mechanics and control theory, linear algebra and operator theory, numerical analysis and computer sciences.

Proceedings of these conferences are published as special issues of Journal of Electrical Engineering, a journal published by the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology STU and Slovak Academy of Sciences, Bratislava. 101 papers were published in the first four Proceedings  and some elsewhere.

The fifth ISCAM took place on 11-12 April, 2003. First time, also a plenary lecture was given at the beginning of ISCAM-conference. Professor Dr. Erich Peter Klement from the Johannes Kepler University Linz gave a lecture: “Application of some mathematical concepts in image processing.”
